Do you guys read Calvin and Hobbes? I practically based my childhood around those comics. A more mild-mannered childhood but just as imaginative. Do you remember the very last strip? I think about it every New Year. “It’s a magical world, Hobbes, ol’ buddy… let’s go exploring!”

TWO THINGS I AM GRATEFUL FOR (SPECIFIC)

1. I'm grateful for this blog. Not only have I made new friends like @TheDiceGirls but I've also created a space to collect my thoughts. Growing up I liked the idea of journaling but not the actual act. Maybe Future Me will look back on these thoughts fondly. Or not. I'm not him.

2. I'm grateful for so many people I'm half-tempted to start listing them like mid-tier Youtubers reading their Patron supporters. I'll resist, otherwise, we'll be here all day. The world might be burning down but I have good people to roast marshmallows with over the embers.

ONE THING THAT WENT WELL DURING THE DAY

I admit I didn't finish my D&D (not) One-Shot but I did apply for another job. No knowing if anything will come from it but I feel really good about this one. I spent several hours reworking my resume and cover letter to target the posting specifically. On to the next one!

ONE ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL ACTION ITEM FOR THE DAY

I want to start 2023 off on the right foot but I'm tired. There's a line from Inside Llewyn Davis, "I'm tired. I thought I just needed a night's sleep but it's more than that." I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel that. So I'm just going to chip away at the D&D (not) One-Shot.

WHATEVER IS ON MY MIND

I'm drawing a blank, folks. I let myself think about the bigness of a new year, a clean slate, a fresh start and it's overwhelming. Having a critical action item every day is exhausting. Daily walks and job applications. I'm out of spoons before I even begin.

The solution seems clear enough, find something small and doable and do it. When I write I never think about THE NOVEL, I think about the next page. I trust that if I take one step at a time, eventually I'll get where I need to go. Let's see where 2023 takes me.
All best,
Shane Z.
