Let's face it, anyone in the TTRPG community is frustrated by Wizards of the Coast's parasitic update to the OGL. There's not much I can add besides links to better-informed folk than me. Fuck it. I'm going back to the Cypher System.
1. I am faced with a question; do I allow this whole blog to become a rant against WotC (just for today, I mean)? I will at least say I am grateful for the community of creatives that built themselves up around D&D. They have been lovely to me and I hope they get through this
2. Okay, on a different note, I bought a lamp. I know how goofy that sounds, to be grateful for a lamp, but it's one of those clamp lamps that doesn't take up as much space. My desk has always been cramped and this just makes it easier for me to breathe while I write.
ONE THING THAT WENT WELL DURING THE DAY
I reached out to a sensitivity reader for my novel and they asked for "a detailed synopsis or outline..., including warnings for the trauma that will be the basis for each character’s arc." I didn't have one on hand so I started writing one. I'm 3 pages and 25% of the way done.
ONE ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL ACTION ITEM FOR THE DAY
I'm pissed at WotC and my (not) One-Shot was absolutely written for D&D, so ... what do I do with it now? I have no intention of scrapping it. Am I capable of converting it to a different system? I joked about it earlier but I did get my start with the Cypher System.
WHATEVER IS ON MY MIND
You get three guesses as to what's on my mind. That's right. I'm tired. I'm always tired because there's always something going on in the world that makes me tired. The future looks dour and even our games aren't free from uncertainty and capitalistic bullshit. I'm just tired.
Is anybody out there just buckling under the existential weight of <gestures vaguely> everything? I see a lot of black clouds and not a lot of silver linings. But we keep creating and we keep connecting, right? Not because it'll fix the world but because it's what makes us human.
All best,
Shane Z.
P.S. Happy Insurrection Day to those who celebrate.
